ROCK star Justin Hawkins is back with a new band.
The ex-frontman of Lowestoft’s The Darkness has put together a new group, Hot Leg, who are going out on tour next month and due to release their debut album in October.
Hawkins shot to worldwide fame with The Darkness, who sold more than a million records of their breakthrough album Permission To Land, scored a string of top 10 hits and won three Brit Awards.
But the band folded two years ago when Hawkins quit amid a crippling drink and drugs addiction. The other three members of the band, including Hawkins’ brother Dan, have gone on to form Stone Gods.

Now, after a spell in rehab, a failed bid to enter the Eurovision Song Contest and his acting debut playing Screaming Lord Sutch in a film about the life of music producer Joe Meek, Hawkins is back to what he does best.
He has recruited guitarist Pete Rinaldi, bassist Samuel SJ Stokes and drummer Darby Todd for the new group.
Hot Leg have already released a free download of a new song, Heroes, which features more of Hawkins’ trademark high-pitched vocals and crashing guitar riffs.
Their debut album has been recorded and is due out in October following a four-date UK tour starting at the Proud Galleries on London on August 6.
A couple of years ago The Darkness were big. I mean REALLY big. Their tongue-in-cheek spandex clad rock antics combined with some damn catchy songs took them from unknowns to megastars almost overnight. Their meteoric rise to fame was only matched by the speed that it all fell apart.
Most of the original band (sans Justin Hawkins) have reformed as “The Stone Gods“, but what of Justin – the original front man?
Well, after a couple of years of sobriety, a short lived solo project (British Whale) and an attempt to represent England in the Eurovision Song Contest (honestly! I’m not making this up!) he is back with a new band Hot Leg.

Hot Leg is the new project of Justin Hawkins, former lead singer of The Darkness. Hot Leg are billed as ‘an entirely hairier beast’, and still in the rock vein.
Hawkins distinctive vocal style is joined by guitarist Pete Rinaldi, with bass and drums provided by Samuel SJ Stokes and Darby Todd.
The Hot Leg debut album is set for release in October 2008. It will be released through Barbecue Rock Records.
The rock quartet are to take to the road on their debut UK tour. The three dates are as follows:
Wed 06 August Proud Galleries, London
Thu 07 August Barfly, Birmingham
Fri 08 August Roadhouse, Manchester
Ex-Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins’ band Hot Leg have a brand new track available for free download.
The song is called Heroes – and it’s a primitively produced romp full of Hawkins’ familiar high-pitched whoops.

Darkness Frontman Makes Comeback
Justin Hawkins, former frontman of British rock group The Darkness, is set to make his comeback later this year when he unveils his new group Hot Leg.
The Darkness collapsed after Hawkins left the group in 2006, citing creative differences and media intrusion as reasons for wanting to leave the spotlight. With his former group now just a memory, Hawkins is ready to unveil his latest rock juggernaut – Hot Leg.
While The Darkness were far from loved by critics, they did have a massive fan base who will be eager to hear Hawkins’ new material. The band have unveiled a UK tour for August, with tickets available from the band’s myspace page. Fans who buy their tickets from their will also receive a free download track “Heroes”.
With their debut album due to be released in October, it looks like busy times are ahead for Hawkins & co.

“Hawkins’ patented ‘Truth Larynx’ is the perfect foil to the 6-stringed rapier of Pete ‘Liquid Guitar Hands’ Rinaldi, the Axemeister General. Meanwhile Samuel SJ Stokes and Darby Todd have emulsified into one muscular unit now known only as ‘The PowerZone'” a press release for the band further expands. The band are set to release their debut album in October, and are currently offering fans the chance to download the track ‘Heroes’ from their official myspace profile, a track which apparently will not make it onto the final album. The band are set to play: August 6th Proud Galleries, London The remainder of the former Darkness members are currently touring as The Stone Gods. |
