Hotleg & Justin Hawkins Live @ The Barfly Birmingham

August 12, 2008
When the mail came through confirming the pass for HOTLEG I thought to myself, this I have got to see, the return of Justin ‘Dave’ Hawkins, we all witnessed the prolific rise of ‘The Darkness’ and also the public demise leaving Hawkins needing rehab, what was he going to do? Is he re-inventing himself? new direction? well tonight I find out.

I stood with Justin pre-show, he looks well, happy and excited, at 9 O’clock Hotleg take to the stage and at this point in the review I feel I need to apologise if I offend anyone, but I’ve got’a say it as I saw it, Hotleg, is the campest rock band on the planet, oh yes my friends, they most certainly are, they fall just shy of Elton and David’s wedding on the camp scale, but Hawkins stage persona is still impressive as he struts around the stage, Justin is a crowd pleaser who loves the attention. The music comes over very heavy (in a camp way) as the band go through their repertoire with Hawkins doing all the right moves, his devoted followers, donned with headbands to resemble their hero are watching his every move.

Actually mid-show something did happen, a lady fan of 70 odd !, had written to Justin to say she had quit listening to music after he left ‘The Darkness’, so Justin and the band invited the lady to the show, Rita joined the band on stage (slowly) given the mic and the band burst into ‘Thing called love’, a nice touch from Hawkins.

Tracks like ‘gay in the 80s’, ‘Do it in the Dark’ & ‘Prima Donna’ see Hawkins & Rinaldi (doing some outstanding lead solos) are flirting with each other, swapping guitars mid song and getting far to close for comfort, it’s a bit like the TV program ‘The Office’ you cringe and feel embarrassed, but you love it and even discuss it with your mates, Hotleg are the same, its outrageous campness, you cringe, but at the same time you love it, its hilarious camp rock music that only Hawkins gets away with, if you are a fan of the Darkness then you already know Hotleg, if you’re an old git like me, and you remember bands like the mighty “Sweet” and one of my favourites Marc Bolan, then go and get down with Hotleg.

Over all I’ve enjoyed my Hotleg experience, its good time rock n roll and no one is going to get disapointed. Right, I’m off to buy a headband, spandex pants and then settle down with my shiatsu on the settee and catch the re-runs of Will & Grace ….

SECRET gig?

SECRET gig?

Caught live: Hot Leg at Proud Galleries, London

August 10, 2008

Justin Hawkins could never lie low for long despite quitting The Darkness and having a breakdown.

And in his first gig for two years, the master showman’s new outfit, Hot Leg, exceeded all expectations with 90 minutes of new material, daring covers of The Power Of Love by Jennifer Rush AND Huey Lewis, and even a version of the Darkness single I Believe In A Thing Called Love.

Justin (right) may have cut back on the pantomime flourishes and the catsuits, but not on the fun. And the new material is from the top drawer. The band’s calling card is We Are Hot Leg while there are plenty of great new singalongs.

By the end the crowd were baying for more. The second coming of Hawkins is even bigger and better.

This Just-in: King-Sized Tut-Tuts at Hot Leg’s Glasgow Faux Pas

This Just-in: King-Sized Tut-Tuts at Hot Leg’s Glasgow Faux Pas

While no one has ever accused ex-Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins of possessing subtlety or panache, a little research could have gone a long way to helping the Glasgow debut of his new “man rock” outfit Hot Leg go a bit more smoothly last night.  The ‘Leg were delighting an enthusiastic crowd at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut with their dirty, dirty guitar stramash when, somewhat unexpectedly, they launched into a stomping cover of Tina Turner’s ‘Simply The Best’.  Now, for anyone who, like Justin Hawkins, is not west of Scotland-savvy, this particular anthem has, for the past 20 years, been associated with Rangers Football Club – most particularly during their run of nine consecutive Scottish Premier League titles from 1989-1997.  It therefore came as no surprise when many angry men started abandoning their pints and leaving hurriedly, lest they be associated for even a split-second with a roomful of drunks swaying along to this particular piece of air-punching nonsense.  If only Celtic fans could have found a little bit of irony in the situation – having just (as the papers say) “crashed out” of European competition before the season has even begun, fans of last year’s UEFA Cup finalists are hardly in a position to proclaim superiority.  As for the unintentionally hilarious Hawkins and his trendy crew (”Hot Leg are proud to wear Reebok trainers”, incidentally), it’ll be entertaining to see how soon they catch up with the Duke of Edinburgh in committing risible diplomatic gaffes.

I Have Grave News

Hot Leg @ Roadhouse

FROM the Arena to the Roadhouse . . . it’s been a long way down for Justin Hawkins after the demise of The Darkness.

A couple of years ago he was playing venues packed with thousands before drink and drug problems brought the bandwagon to a shuddering halt.

Now he has started on the long journey back with his new band Hot Leg in front of a couple of hundred in a cramped, dark cellar in the Northern Quarter.

But the flamboyant and charismatic front-man has lost none of his swagger and bravado, and still has that twinkle in his eye as he belts out songs from the band’s soon-to-be-released album in that familiar falsetto voice.

I can’t tell you the names of the songs, other than Heroes, because I’ve never heard them before but if you liked The Darkness then you will like Hot Leg because you can hardly see the join.

Hawkins is joined on the tiny stage by bass player Samuel Stokes, drummer Darby Todd and quicksilver guitarist Pete Rinaldi and for most of this gig all I can see is the tops of their heads from the back of the packed room.

But a few songs into the set and Hawkins manages to stand up on something and rips off his t-shirt to reveal his heavily tattooed and boney frame while someone throws a pair of knickers on the stage.

It’s all a bit cheesy – just like the music really – but it’s fun and everyone in the Roadhouse is having a great night – not least the band playing to their first sold out gig.

“This is the most fun we’ve had on the whole tour,” says Hawkins. “You guys are the home of rock. Manchester is the home of rock.”

They play a few covers to beef up the set but resist the temptation to play anything by The Darkness – until the final encore when they blast into I Believe In A Thing Called Love.

And everybody loved it. Welcome back Justin.
