Hot Leg Get Mediaeval On Yo Asses

September 25, 2008

Justin Hawkins‘ new outfit, the ludicrously-named Hot Leg are gearing up for an October release of their debut single, ‘Trojan Guitar‘.

The article I read in whatever weekend paper I got on the weekend (I forget which) indicated the video shoot was a pretty nutty affair and that somebody may have offended a mediaeval reenactment society a bit. But it wouldn’t have been Justin as he’s off the nose-candy for the duration.

Hot Leg Announces New Tour

Whether you consider them the Darkness part deux, or just something Justin Hawkins can do before he goes back to trimming hedges and mowing lawns, theres no denying that Hot Leg have certainly shown they have what it takes to be a, well, band. The foursome had a small UK club tour in August and early reports suggest the band are a well oiled machine. Hawkins quit the Darkness in Oct 2006 due to cocaine addictions and other unmentioned reasons. The band, who were dropped by their label, rebranded with bassist Richie Edwards and became Stone Gods. Hawkins, asides from a failed attempt to represent the UK at the Eurovision song contest in 2007, did very little.

The band, who are supporting everyone at the moment from Alter Bridge to Extreme, will be playing some of their own dates in Oct at selected clubs around the UK. Dates are, as you can see, included on the picture with this post. So far I’ve only heard two songs from the band, Heroes and Trojan Guitar, the latter of which you’ll be relieved to know has nothing to do with condoms. The first thing that strikes me when I listen to the tracks is, and your going to hate me for saying this but its true, Freddie Mercury and Queen. Hot Leg is perhaps just what the Darkness would sound like if they were still going today. Extreme will be happy, as fans of them know they are huge fans, and Brian May once introduced a live set from the band in 1992 saying they “get Queen more than anyone else in the music industry” which is obviously a great compliment. Extreme also composed that song, you know, the one they play at every wedding and funeral in the country. “More Than Words”
Not missing a chance to have a good time and enjoy a great gig I’ve already gotten my ticket!

Trojan Guitar by Hot Leg

Track of the day

div#related-article-links p a, div#related-article-links p a:visited { color:#06c; }

Listen here

TRACK: Trojan Guitar

WHO: Hot Leg – they’ve got hooks, and they know how to use them.

WHAT: More glam rock by that bloke from The Darkness.

THE HYPE: “Debut single Trojan Guitar is 5 minutes 22 seconds of perfect rock music – riffs, melodies, solos, drop downs” – lastbroadcast.co.uk

WE SAY: Remember The Darkness? The band who entertained us with their glam-metal pastiche. Their eccentric frontman Justin Hawkins left the band two years ago, but now he’s back. And it’s comforting to hear that, while he may be older and perhaps wiser, he’s certainly not taking himself any more seriously.

Hawkins has hung up his lycra catsuits in favour of headbands, but the hard rock, Spinal Tap-esque sound remains – and with his new blonde hair, he certainly looks more like David St Hubbins than ever Trojan Guitar is stacked full of fun hooks, riffs and falsetto vocals. If you liked The Darkness, you’ll love this – if you didn’t, perhaps not. Either way, expect this to become a DJ’s favourite in time for this year’s round of Christmas parties.

Hot Leg have also made a ridiculous video to accompany the song, which features the band re-enacting a medieval battle. Will Hawkins be able to swashbuckle his way into the charts for a second stab at fame?

IF YOU ONLY NEED TO KNOW ONE THING: If you go to Hot Leg’s MySpace and join their mailing list, you can also download a free copy of another track, Heroes.

WHERE CAN I GET MY HANDS ON IT: Trojan Guitar is released October 20.

New Gig – Stay Beautiful

September 23, 2008

From HL’s MySpace

On Saturday October 4th Hot Leg will be performing at Stay Beautiful.

Stay Beautiful occurs on the first Saturday of every month at The Purple Turtle in London’s Camden Town and is co-hosted by the legendary Simon Price (Rock writer at the Independent on Sunday – see the Leg’s scrapbook!).

Mr Price himself says:

”The ‘official’ stage time we give out to the public in listings etc is 10.30pm, but just this once I’ll admit that the actual, no-bullsh1t stage time for bands at SB is 11.00pm SHARP, and this will apply to Hot Leg. (The length of the set? Hmm, how long’s a piece of string?)

Nevertheless, I strongly recommend getting there EARLY, because there are no advance tickets, a queue can build up around 11ish even on a normal night, the capacity’s only 300ish, and we’re anticipating a massive amount of interest in this one.”

The Darkness is BACK…well, sorta…not really at all, actually

September 22, 2008

Former Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins’s new band, Hot Leg, will release their second single “Trojan Guitar” next month when they hit their Great Britain tour. I’ll be honest, I’ve listened to a lot of Darkness, and Hot Leg’s not much different. Which is a good thing, actually. Probably the best thing.
