Justin Hawkins Breaks Live Respite With Hot Leg

Justin Hawkins played his first gig under new band Hot Leg in London last night.

Playing at the Proud Galleries venue in Camden, Hawkins was equally as flamboyant as he used to be when playing with the Darkness – performing stage tricks and sporting pink fingernails.

Still keeping The Darkness as part of the family, the set was closed with a “cover” of sorts of his former band’s biggest hit, ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love.’

Speaking to the BBC about the first “proper music concert” he’s done in a couple of years, Hawkins described his fear by saying, “I think in the time since then I’ve suffered what you might call a breakdown.”

The Hot Leg tour will continue with sold-out dates in Manchester, Glasgow and tonight’s bash at Birmingham’s Barfly.

You can purchase tickets for the tour through Gigwise here. Alternatively, call our ticket hotline on 0871 230 1098 for more details.

Justin Hawkins’ Darkness pride

Justin Hawkins’ Darkness pride

Thursday, 7 August 2008

Justin Hawkins is “proud” of his time in The Darkness.

The ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ singer suffered much ridicule during his time in the spandex-clad rock group – which he left in 2006 to battle drink and drug problems – but insists he has no regrets.

Justin, who now fronts rock outfit Hot Legs, said: “It’s not the sort of thing you can turn around and pretend didn’t happen. I’m actually quite proud of the work that we did – not all of the work we did.

“When I think of what we achieved in a year, we went from opening Glastonbury to headlining Reading and I don’t know if many people can say that really.”

Justin began Hot Legs first tour in London last night (06.08.08) and says he hasn’t ruled out his famous lycra catsuits making a reappearance.

He said: “I’ve still got some of the catsuits and luckily, because I’ve been looking after myself a bit better, I fit into them again.

“But should I move on? Obviously, it’s the ultimate singing uniform, but I don’t know if it’s right for Hot Legs at this stage.

“Perhaps for encores and big shows I could start bringing out the one-piece.”

Mirror.co.uk’s Thursday gossip round-up

August 7, 2008

today’s top showbiz

It’s Thursday, and we here at Mirror.co.uk’s Showbiz Towers have been thinking about historical moments in musical history, as one is wont to do.

Granted, we weren’t at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in 1966 to see Bob Dylan called a Judas, nor were we there to see the Sex Pistols in 1976 and we didn’t bother going to see the Stone Roses at Spike Island in 1990.

However, we were there when Richey from the Manic Street Preachers carved ‘4 Real’ into his arm in 1991 (and took him to hospital afterwards), we did see Nirvana’s last ever UK gig at Reading Festival in 1992 – and last night, we were privileged to be at the first ever Hot Leg gig.

Who are Hot Leg, you cry? Well, they’re the new band from Justin Hawkins, former frontman of The Darkness. They debuted last night at Camden’s Proud to mark two years to the day that Justin’s been sober – having beaten the booze and drugs demons that caused him to leave The Darkness in the first place.

And boy, are we glad to have him back, as bar his brief attempt to represent Britain at last year’s Eurovision Song Contest, he’s been gone for far too long as we need more popstars like him who really don’t take themselves too seriously.

So what are Hot Leg like? Pretty much like The Darkness really, only a bit more flamboyant (if that were possible), a bit more proper metal but still hilariously funny. You can check out a bit of them tackling a cover of Jennifer Rush’s Eighties power ballad The Power Of Love by clicking here.

And just for old times’ sake, they finished with The Darkness’ I Believe In A Thing Called Love. Okay, it might not have been a milestone in rock, but frankly, we’ll be grinning about the gig for a good few days to come yet, it was that good. Welcome back to the world of showbiz, Justin.

Review: Justin Hawkins returns with new band

Justinhawkinscut_2Former Darkness singer Justin Hawkins returned last night for his first ever gig with new band Hot Leg.

Rather than struggle with a change of direction, this new combo picks up where The Darkness left off.

Falsetto, hard-riffing and posing are still to the fore, though thankfully without the skintight jumpsuits this time.

It was hard to tell how ironic The Darkness were being in their prime, but clearly rock cliches just come naturally to Hawkins.

He seems unable to get through a song without punching the air or waggling his tongue like Gene Simmons.

JustinhawkinscrowdWhile the new material, like free download Heroes, hurtled by without any real standout moments, it was the inspired back to back covers of The Power of Love (first Jennifer Rush, then Huey Lewis and the News) that proved the evening’s highlight.

They won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but if The Darkness rocked your world, you’ll be glad for this second coming. Everyone else will probably give Hot Leg the cold shoulder.

Ex-Darkness star returns to stage

Justin Hawkins at Hot Leg gig

Hot Leg are embarking on a mini-tour of the UK

Former Darkness singer Justin Hawkins has made his live comeback, unveiling his new band Hot Leg two years after suffering a drug-induced breakdown.

Wearing skin-tight tiger-print trousers, the flamboyant frontman returned to the high-octane, high-camp rock with which he made his name.

It was his first gig since leaving The Darkness, who won three Brit Awards in 2004 and scored five UK top 10 hits.

Hawkins quit the group in 2006 amid a high-profile drug battle.

“It’s the first time I’ve done a proper music concert in a couple of years,” he told the crowd of several hundred at Proud Galleries in Camden, north London.

“I think in the time since then I’ve suffered what you might call a breakdown.”

But the singer was back on form, performing familiar stage theatrics to an enthusiastic reception with his three new bandmates.

He closed the show with one of his former band’s biggest hits, I Believe in a Thing Called Love.

Hot Leg also played cover versions of two 1980s hits called The Power of Love – one by Jennifer Rush and the other by Huey Lewis and the News.

They are now continuing their mini-tour in Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.

Hot Leg at Camden Proud Galleries – 6th August

August 7, 2008
Justin Hawkins’ live return…we have the report

Hot Leg, debut gig, Proud Galleries, Camden, 6th July 2008 If you had the pre-conceived idea that Justin Hawkins was a flamboyant dressing, novelty rock anthem yelping, glam-rock show-off, then you won’t need much introduction to his new band, Hot Leg. Playing his first gig for two years, Hawkins has been through a breakdown, rehab and the messy break-up of The Darkness, to surface once again and try to take Hot Leg to the top, starting at Camden’s Proud Galleries.

After that two year hiatus, you might think that Hawkins would come back with some fresh ideas or a new take on modern popular music. But why should he? The Darkness were successful and had number one album, so he’s surely within his rights to stick with the same Led Zeppelin on acid style. After all, this shows integrity, loyalty to a genre and determination to make it to the top the way he wants to.

Everything you expect from Hawkins is here. The tiger pants, the headbands, undoubted enthusiasm, and lets face it, the man knows how to put on a show. He constantly addresses the crowd, enticing a chant of ‘Hot Leg’ and engaging in a bizarre scream-off with guitarist Peter Rinaldi to see who can reach the highest pitch. Needless to say, the crowd love it.

But are the sing-along anthems that made The Darkness so popular present? The ingredients are certainly here: face melting solos, epic drum endings, scream till you burst vocals. Despite this, nothing really sticks in your head the way ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ did and the riffs blur into one-another in an undistinguishable manner. Mid-set the band begins a song a cappella, bringing much needed change to proceedings.

Strutting around the stage violently thrusting his pelvis forward, Hawkins screamed out ‘Trojan Guitar’ and ‘Heroes’ (both up on the bands MySpace page), to the glee of the ponytail-heavy crowd, but it’s the set-closer, the aforementioned ‘I Believe…’ brings the biggest cheer of the night.

Certainly unique amongst the music scene today, and lacking no gusto or ability to visually entertain, it would seem Hot Leg have a market to appeal to. Chart success could be beyond them on this showing, but who honestly thought ‘Permission to Land’ would receive five-platinum status? The epic sound of Hot Leg could be about to hit your radio, whether you like it or not.

Justin unveils his new project Hot Leg and looks back on The Darkness

06 August 2008 – The Darkness’ former frontman Justin Hawkins makes his live return at a gig at London’s Proud Galleries tonight (6 August).

Hawkins quit the Darkness in 2006 after a much publicised battle with substance abuse, but now he’s back with his new band, Hot Leg.

Post Darkness

Hawkins told 6 Music that he left The Darkness to give himself a chance to recover from his battle with alcohol and drug addiction.

He said: “I left for lost of different reasons. Obviously the ones that were to do with my recovery were fairly well publicised at the time. I think, by and large, there were creative differences as well.”

So, with newfound time on his hands, Hawkins said he got into tennis and dealt with the come down from his former lifestyle.

He said: “I needed to do that, just in terms of the booze stuff, it was pretty important to do that anyway. If you’re gonna give your recovery a fighting chance then you really have to put it first until you’re stronger.”

As to whether it feels strange to be back in the public eye after all this time, Hawkins said: “Yeah, I mean I don’t think the eye is as public as it used to be, this is much more low key.”

“The drummer’s amazing, the bass player’s amazing, the guitarist is phenomenal. I think it will just be an intense night of man rock.”

His new band

And it seems the genesis of his band name is already a mystery.

When 6 Music asked him how it sprang to existence, Hawkins responded: “I think it’s because when I originally conceived the name I saw it as a leg for an L, so it was like a name with a built in logo type, and I never realised it was nuclear reactor.”

And he’s fond of the new name and project: “I liked the fact that it was singular as well, much more focussed – which I think musically is the difference between this and my previous band, much more single minded in its pursuit of man rock.”

As for what people should expect from the first Hot Leg tour, which sees them play four dates in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow from 6-9 August, Hawkins said: “The drummer’s amazing, the bass player’s amazing, the guitarist is phenomenal and me. I think it will just be an intense night of man rock.”

For this project Hawkins has taken control, setting up Barbeque Rock Records, of which he is Managing Director and head of A & R.

He jokingly told us they’ve just signed a new record label, for the impressive amount of 100 million dollars. Before laughingly saying: “It’s a tax maneuver, it’s just paper.”

Looking back on The Darkness days

The singer said he’s not at all worried about being forever associated with his former band.

“I spent 6 years of my life in The Darkness. It’s not the sort of thing you can turn around and pretend didn’t happen and I’m actually quite proud of the work that we did – not all of the work we did.

“When I think of what we achieved in a year, we went from opening Glastonbury to headlining Reading and I don’t know if many people can say that really.”

He prepares to front new band…

Justin Hawkins 'Proud' Of Being In The Darkness

Justin Hawkins says he’s “proud” of the six years he spent in his former band, The Darkness.

The singer, who now fronts the group Hot Legs, left the band in 2006 in order to tackle his problems with drugs and alcohol.

Speaking to the BBC about his former band, Hawkins said: “It’s not the sort of thing you can turn around and pretend didn’t happen and I’m actually quite proud of the work that we did – not all of the work we did.

“When I think of what we achieved in a year, we went from opening Glastonbury to headlining Reading and I don’t know if many people can say that really.”

Hot Legs will play their debut show at London’s Proud Gallery later (August 6th). The band will also play intimate shows in Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow this week.
