Bands To Watch #60 - Hot Leg

hotlegYou either love Justin Hawkins or hate him with his outrageous appearence and skewed views on certain topics but he is one of the most famous british frontman from Britain. After the demise of The Darkness, a desperate attempt at eurovision and the overcoming of a drug problem, Justin’s new bandHot leg sees him return in style.

The catsuits have gone but Hawkins still manages to keep up his appearence in interesting choises of clothing like tiger striped trousers, neckachiefs, hair bands and a dash of mascara. Joined by a relatively unheard of bandmates Pete Rinaldi (Lead Guitar, Lea BVs), Samuel SJ Stokes (Bass,  BVs) and Darby Todd ( Drums) the group sound like a “more intense Darkness” according to Justin Himself.

The debut album is set for release in early 2009 and will showcase some great hits that are sure to creep into the charts. A couple of free downloads are available on their MySpace but are they worth getting? The answer is yes! “Trojan Guitar” features a big drum beat, dominant guitars and classic high pitched vocals from Justin. The other tune, “Heroes” is similar and shows that Hot Leg are capable of being consistently good.

The band sound like The Darkness but not quite as good. They’re in their early stages but Hot Leg don’t seem to have the same presence. However, The Darkness have high standards and Hot Leg are easily capable of getting there. I for one am excited about the album but I will be very interested to see how it gets recieved – my guess is loved by some and hated by others.

Out of The Darkness comes Hot Leg and Stone Gods

Amid rampant rumors that Brit-rockers The Darkness will reform in 2009 with their original line up, lead singer/guitarist Justin Hawkins has announced the rise of a new Spinal Tap – inspired group, Hot Leg.

Hot Leg will unleash its brand of new-age classic rock on the world with its debut album, “Red Light Fever,” in January.

With his flawless falsetto, which he refers to as the “Truth Larynx,” Hawkins will lead the new band with help from guitarist Pete Rinaldi, bassist Samuel SJ Stokes and drummer Darby Todd.

On their MySpace, Hot Leg describes themselves as “an entirely hairier beast” than The Darkness, but the band’s powerhouse Queen and AC/DC infused ballads seem to pick up right where the latter band left off when it split in 2006.

If anyone is wondering what the hell happened to the other guys in The Darkness (cause I thought they’d totally dropped off the face of the planet!), they’re producing a more raw, southern-rock-style sound in their own band, Stone Gods.

Brother to Justin, guitarist Dan Hawkins, and The Darkness ex-bassist Richie Edwards, co-write the songs for Stone Gods, who released their debut “Silver Spoons and Broken Bones” in July.

The formation of two different bands seems to represent a clear parting-of-ways for the Hawkins brothers, but with the advent of Hot Leg in 2009, who will reign as kings of UK man-rock?

Who knows, but its nice to see that there’s still room in rock n’ roll for out-of-control hair, epic thrashing and a bit of comedic relief.

Check out five songs and a list of tour dates on Hot Leg’s MySpace.

Purchase Stone Gods’ album, “Silver Spoons and Broken Bones” on iTunes or Amazon.com.

Hot Leg – The new band from Justin Hawkins, the former frontman for The Darkness, is due for a release in January. From what they’ve released online, it sounds just as silly as The Darkness was and I’m okay with that.

The screaming rocker is back with his new band…

Been wondering what former The Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins has been doing? Well stop wondering, ‘cos we can tell you. He’s been forming a new band, called Hot Leg. And as you can see from the image, he’s not exactly toning it down. So we had a word with him about his new band, Steve Tyler and Ruel Fox. And if that doesn’t entice you to read nothing will…

Hi Justin, how is it all going?

Very well thanks. Not too bad. The single’s out now, so we had a launch day, I’ve been in stores, doing interviews, radio, talking to yourself.

How is the new band?

It’s going really well, just trying to work out what the next single will be really. We’re not gigging till February, we’ve got a big tour then, but the album comes out at the beginning of February so after the album comes out you can go out because people know the songs and stuff.

What’s been your best ever gig?

Doing Reading, both times, was really cool. Internationally I think my favourite gig ever was probably when we played in Italy on my birthday in 2006 and the crowd were just unbelievable.

How different is it playing abroad?

It depends where you go really and it depends how the record has gone at the place you go. Italy was fantastic for us and I think that’s because the record company there really, really tried and really made the effort to give us a break. Also you could say the same about America and Canada, and Australia was a good laugh, but I think that’s just because Australian people know how to have a good time!

How about your worst gigs?

Some of the support slots we’ve done in this country have been really terrible! But at the same time festival slots have gone really well for us. There’s good and bad in every country I think, in this country more than others!

Any weird fan stories?

All our fans are just geniuses and have impeccable taste in music!

Right. Ever been star struck?

I was amazed when I met Steven Tyler, he has been my hero for the last seventeen years and we got to meet him and he turned out to be really, really nice. He looked awesome and was really cool, a real inspiration.

Have you met any annoying celebrities?

I don’t know any annoying celebrities.

We see diplomacy is the name of the game today then. On to football then, who’s your team?

I used to go and see Norwich play a lot when I was a kid during the late eighties, early nineties. Thef Robert Fleck, Robert Rosario, Ruel Fox years, when we were playing really good football and just being competitive. The last time I saw them play was against Chelsea, in the Premier League a few years ago. It didn’t go well!

Did it put you off then?

No, I just haven’t had time to follow it properly, I used to love going with my dad and watching them. I’m getting Sky plumbed in to my house, so I should be able to follow it a bit more closely, but I’ve been out of the loop quite a bit really. I always hear bad things!

Yeah it’s not gone too well recently. Though they did beat Ipswich the other week…

The problem I remember was that they had all these fantastic players and they just became a selling club, and I think we’re still picking up the pieces from that really. At least they’re holding on to people now which is something.

How about playing then? We’ve seen you in a few celebrity tournaments…

I’ve played in a few of them. We took a skeleton squad to St James’ Park and played at Newcastle’s ground, we got to the quarter-finals in that one. We had one substitute, a guy from Hollyoaks, who took one look at us and decided he didn’t want to be on our team!

How do Hollyoaks people always end up at these things?

I don’t know, especially as it was just for the music industry! But I think we actually beat the team he ended up joining so that was cool! That was like 2003 early days of The Darkness. Then the next year we took a really strong squad, we went to Goodison Park, we were coached by Steve McManaman and Robbie Fowler and we had John Aldridge in our team as our ringer! We ended up winning the whole tournament! I actually won the player of the tournament trophy but I didn’t feel as though I deserved it and I gave it to Dougie Bruce who was another ringer who worked at our publishers but he also used to play for Rangers! But everyone in the squad played and scored so it was a good day. We’ve also played at Millwall and Birmingham, so my football career spans four major stadiums and only ended in success once!

You did a World Cup song for England in 2006. Ever fancy doing another with Hot Leg?

Yeah I might do, I’m up for doing an Olympics song as well. Something like “the Olympics is coming home”, not to Greece!

Finally, what advice can you give us on how best to wear a catsuit?

My advice would be don’t make too much of a big deal of it really. Try and wear it around the house, and get used to it. You’ll find in time that it’s the superior garment and there is really no need for any other types of clothing in your wardrobe. Other pieces of clothing will simply become cumbersome and unnecessary. I see it as a singing overall really, so if you’re going to do some singing, put your overalls on!

What about using talcum powder?

No you just have to squeeze in, just don’t try and do it when sweaty would be my advice, have a dry body, there’s no reason talc would help.

The new single, ‘I’ve Met Jesus’, is out now. The band’s debut album, ‘Red Light Fever’ is released 9th February 2009.

Justin Hawkins launches Dark Fire at Gibson

December 16, 2008

The Gibson’s Dark Fire guitar is with out a doubt the most technologically advanced guitar that has ever been made. The guitar which looks very similar to a Gibson Standard Les Paul can tune it’s self and has a staggering 200 presets of different tunings. The PR launch for the guitar which is going to in he shops next Monday has certainly been “interesting”. Last week the PR manager and I went around various landmarks in London and projected the Dark Fire guitar on the side of various London landmarks. Battersea Power Station went smoothly however when we tried our antics at the Tower of London were swiftly cautioned by the police under the anti terrorism act!

Thankfully the launch at Gibson’s studio went without to many hiccups. Justin Hawkins, new band Hot Leg were set to perform a private showcase at Gibson’s studio and to showcase the guitar which needed to be flown in from Germany especially for the occasion. Before the gig I did a couple of PR shots of the band which no doubt will be used to promote the guitar over the coming months. This was the first time I had met Justin and the rest of the band and have to say found them very friendly and accommodating (photographers have the tendency to ask bands do the most ridiculous things).

The gig was very good and very different to the other showcases that I have covered at Gibson’s studios in the past. If you are familiar with Justin Hawkins previous band “The Darkness” you will know what to expect, Hot Leg musically are a mish mash of 70’s glam rock such as Mott the Hoople mixed in with a bit of Hani Rocks and Queen. Hawkins being a great front man pulls it off with effortless ease and the songs although a bit rockier than his previous band are extremely catchy and memorable. Their new single “I met Jesus” is a wonderful pastiche of early Queen and although it may not reach the number 1 slot that Hawkins is hoping for certainly will put his new band on the map. The band are playing across February and March in the UK details of their shows can be found on they MySpace page.
