EXCLUSIVE: Hot Leg Interview

February 20, 2009

Filed Under (Interviews) by simon on 20-02-2009

Still no word on whether Justin made it out of his tunnel last night but if this just happens to be his last interview for a while then it’s a belter. Fresh from The Brits and with a new record to peddle, the former Darkness hero was his usual ebullient self as he talked awards, homosexuality and the value of rock icons Def Leppard and Whitesnake. You can pick up a copy of Red Light Fever now and Hot Leg play Newcastle’s o2 Academy on Friday March 6.

rushonrock: You were back at the Brits this week so what’s the gossip?

Justin Hawkins: Well there isn’t much really. I went as a guest of the BPI and did the red carpet stuff before I ended up sitting at a table with a lady called Sue Whitehouse. It was nice to bump into her. She’s the manager of Hot Leg so we had something in common. Apart from her there were no real names on our table and it was a pretty quiet affair all round. I imagine all the action was backstage. That’s where it all happened when I was invited in the past. For me it was just a chance to get dressed up, do my hair and slap on the make-up.

rushonrock: But it must have kicked off at the aftershow party?

JH: Er, no. The after-show was horrendous and I had to leave early. I was probably the only sober person in Earl’s Court on Wednesday night and it wasn’t the greatest evening out.

rushonrock: At least you got to see the mighty Maiden fly the flag for British rock…

JH: Yeah that was great to see. I was well chuffed and literally leapt out of my seat with delight when it was announced. I thoroughly enjoyed the video piece they did but it’s a shame they weren’t there. On the night it was Kings Of Leon who totally kicked off and they ruled the Brits. Their performance really was superb.

rushonrock: But what about the lack of recognition for AC/DC and Robert Plant?

JH: Mmm that was a bit strange but the Brits is generally like a kind of academy and they like to reward young folks as a rule.

rushonrock: New album Red Light Fever has finally seen the light of day and we wanted to ask you the story behind Ashamed featuring your Eurovision pal Beverlei Brown.

JH: I wrote that song ages ago, probably way back when I was in The Darkness. It’s about reality television and yes, it features Beverlei, who I appeared with on the Eurovision show. But it’s totally unrelated to that. It was written a long time before I appeared on that thing. There’s a good chance Beverlei will pop up with Hot leg at some stage in the future but she’s a busy lady. The last I heard she was touring with Razorlight. I’ll have to chase her up.

rushonrock: Now the other song we like is Gay In The 80s. What’s with that spanking tune?

JH: It’s a look at the fact that homosexuality was taboo in the 80s and a chance to remind people that things are changing in 2009 and that gay people are out there making music. If Katie Perry can sing songs about it why can’t Hot Leg? Just because we’re blokes in a rock band doesn’t mean we can’t tackle the issue. If we can’t then it’s double standards. And getting back to the Brits look who won the long service award – the Pet Shop Boys. Exactly.

rushonrock: Fair point but in the world of rock – and particularly ‘Man Rock’ – being gay and the issue of homosexuality are still relatively taboo.

JH: Like I said a lot is changing. It’s for people like us to stand up and say yes there are gay people in the rock industry. There’s always been a lot of femininity in the rock music that I enjoy – you just have to look at how Poison appeared on the front of Look What The Cat Dragged In to see what I’m saying. And you know what – the ladies love that kind of thing too. The people like it. It’s not the same thing as being gay and I accept that. But I’m saying there’s always been that side to rock music and especially in the 1980s.

rushonrock: And talking of the 1980s what’s your verdict on hair metal heroes Def Leppard and Whitesnake playing Download together this summer?

JH: Well it looks like there’s going to be some kind of Classic Rock Sunday and that should be great. The two bands toured the arenas last year and it was a big success so why not do the same thing outdoors? I don’t think the fact that it’s Download makes any difference. I’ve had the pleasure of playing with both Leppard and Whitesnake over the years and they’re both very nice bands and great musicians. They’re fabulous to watch live and they can teach all of us a thing or two.

Hot Leg – Justin Hawkins bounces back

LOOKING at the pouting ensemble that now surrounds Justin Hawkins, it’s difficult to imagine that he stumbled upon Hot Leg’s members by accident.

Does the man best known as the former frontman of The Darkness really expect us to imagine he unearthed these gold lamé-clad rockers as they now appear before us?

More likely that he invited them into his walk-in wardrobe, told them to squeeze into anything that fitted and handed out a standard issue Rod Stewart wig…

Hawkins’ new gaggle of cock-rockers do certainly look like the sort of fellas who would pump out the band’s Eighties hair rock sound; Pete ‘Liquid Guitar Hands’ Rinaldi is apparently known as the Axemeister General, while Samuel SJ Stokes on bass and former session drummer Darby Todd man The Power Zone.

Brighter lights

Their biggest profile gig to date has been a success stunt to get into the Guinness Book Of Records last November, a stunt that scored them a mention in the book for the highest number of people playing air guitar all at the same time.

Their debut album, Red Light Fever, meanwhile hit the charts at a surprisingly low 81, sinking out of the top 100 within a week.

Still, at least they’re starting life in the Academy 3 and not heading back to the King’s Arms in Salford – the site of Hawkins’ famous diva outburst in the early days of The Darkness.

Is the only way up? CityLife can’t make up its mind; Hawkins has, after all, burnt out brighter lights than this before…

Hot Leg, and The Crave take to the road

February 20, 2009

Former Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins’ new band Hot Leg, and Brighton based quartet The Crave, have announced a string of tour dates over the next few weeks.

The Lowestoft-born Hawkins shot to the heights of fame with The Darkness – and fell from grace when the rock group split. Now he’s back for another taste of stardom with his new band. They have released their debut album, ‘Red Light Fever’ on their own label, Barbeque Rock and with bandmates guitarist Pete Rinaldi, bassist Samuel Stokes and drummer Darby Todd, they’re ready to hit the road.

The rockin’ quartet of The Crave have just finished a tour of Europe with US rockers Shinedown, and are rising stars in the rock firmament. The band spent much of 2008 recording songs for their debut album ‘Anywhere to Everywhere’ and playing up and down the country spreading their infectious riff-tastic rock. Make sure you check them out.

The people behind Harley Davidson also checked out the band on the Brit Bus tour, and as a result invited them to Milwaukee to film a video for one of their tracks ‘Bring It On‘ to promote the 105th Harley Davidson Anniversary Festival. It went down so well they were asked to return for an eight week tour in 2008 to promote the event, and finished being the only unsigned act to play alongside such legends as Bruce Springsteen and the Foo Fighters.

You can see the two bands on the following tour dates:
Thu 26 February The Limelight, Belfast
Sun 01 March TJs, Newport
Mon 02 March The Fleece, Bristol
Wed 04 March Manchester University, Manchester
Thu 05 March Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh
Fri 06 March O2 Academy Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne
Sun 08 March O2 Academy Sheffield, Sheffield
Mon 09 March O2 Academy Birmingham, Birmingham
Tue 10 March O2 Academy Oxford, Oxford
Thu 12 March O2 Academy Islington, London
Fri 13 March Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth
Sat 14 March Concorde 2, Brighton
Mon 16 March The Waterfront, Norwich

Tickets are available now priced at £11, London £13.50, to buy tickets click here.

Q&A: Justin Hawkins

Friday February 20 2009

On solo projects, drugs and rumours on the darkness…

You had a solo project called British Whale. Why did you decide to form a new band?

I missed being in a band. It’s pretty simple — it’s just about four blokes making noise!

Will Hot Leg shows feature spectacular live stunts like The Darkness?

We’re keeping it simple with this stuff. We can’t do pyro or big props and it’s still evolving in terms of presentation. People will get to see exactly what I experience in rehearsals.

Recently you dabbled in acting, playing Screaming Lord Sutch in a biopic of Joe Meek. How did you find the experience?

I haven’t heard anything recently about the movie, so I don’t really know what’s going on with it. It’s been screened at a few film festivals. He’s a fascinating person and Alice Cooper took a lot from him and so did punk rock.

Do you have fond memories of playing in Ireland?

We headlined Oxegen by default because Bowie got sick and we stepped in. It was amazing. At one point, loads of people fell over. We had to stop the set to give everyone a chance to pick people up. I remember presenting an award at the Meteors with Joe Elliott and I was wearing this jacket with tassles. Louis Walsh came over to say hello, but he had just said something mean about The Darkness so I tried to ignore him, but some of my tassles got caught in the scaffolding and I was stuck there. I used to love having a few Guinnesses, but I gave up the drinking.

Really? Obviously that famous spell in the Priory was successful!

I don’t drink, do drugs or smoke. I’ve got an acting role coming up where my character smokes, so I’m a bit worried about that!

Before Christmas, rumours circulated that The Darkness were reforming.

I’ve absolutely no idea where that came from. I’m surprised that people believed what they read to be honest. It’s complete nonsense.

Over the years, we’ve been tabloid fodder and I’ve had all sorts of untrue things written about me, but that one was complete horseshit. It was very annoying that it was said that we don’t get on, because we’ve a great relationship now. They hadn’t bothered to check any of the facts at all.

It was just someone shooting their mouth off and making up the whole thing from start to finish. Even the desert investor in Dubai responsible for Dubai Desert Rock mentioned in the story was all wrong. I’ve played that festival and there is no American investor involved in it at all.

Never say never?

I’d say just never! Life’s too short. I might do a Hot Leg reunion in February, apart from that I’ve no plans. If someone said if you got a huge truck full of money would you do it, I’d still say no.

It was never about money for me. There are far more important things in life, one of which is Hot Leg.

What would be your advice to a band starting out in the current economic and musical climate?

Play a lot and don’t worry about getting a record deal. Just try and get fans. If you get a record deal, you might not have anyone to sell records to! It used to be about doing shows and promoting the album and it was all fairly clear what you had to do.

Now, no one really knows how it’s going to pan out. It’s up in the air, so it’s important that people make up their own minds about what’s good and what’s bad, which is the glory of the internet.

It means that bands can exist without a load of suits telling them what to do. It’s an exciting time, once we figure out where the money is going to come from!

New Releases

February 19, 2009

The last time we heard from Justin Hawkins, things weren’t exactly rosy. While debut Darkness album Permission To Land was probably the most thrillingly ridiculous rock ‘n’ roll pisstake since Spinal Tap, second record One Way Ticket To Hell…And Back proved one way too many, and predictably saw them limp off the scene in a haze of arguments and addictions. Making his return clean and sober, new project Hot Leg pull a lot of the old tricks on debut album Red Light Fever, but lucky for us, the fun is back.

Needless to say, the trick here isn’t to take any of this too seriously. Yes, it’s a decidedly familiar batch of tunes – it takes all of thirty seconds for Hawkins’ trademark falsetto to resurface on ‘Chickens’ – but the vast majority of this is unrelentingly fun. After all, when Hawkins rhymes “eighties”, “gayties” and “straighties” on the predictably ridiculous ‘Gay in the 80s’, it’s virtually impossible not to crack a smile. The campness that proved a selling point before has been kicked up a notch or two as well, while Hawkins’ unquestionable musical ability has never been more evident than on the face-melting theatrics of ‘I’ve Met Jesus’.

Of course, it’s not all good. The tepid balladry of ‘Kissing in the Wind’ is utterly average, while the harmonies here – most conspicuously on ‘You Can’t Hurt Me Anymore’ – are aping Queen more than ever. Ultimately, if you expected Red Light Fever to change the face of rock music as we know it, you missed the point in the first place. For the rest of us, this is perfectly acceptable – if utterly predictable – novelty rock fare.

Justin Legs It!

rushonrock can exclusively reveal that Justin Hawkins was tonight lost in a tunnel somewhere in the south of England.

His last words before he entered the unidentified passage were: “This could get hairy.” Moments later he disappeared – just 24 hours after vanishing from the Brits’ after-show party.

But don’t despair Hot Leg fans. We managed to grab a few minutes with the high-pitched one moments before his unforeseen exit and a brand new interview with the Hawk will appear here tomorrow. Whether Hot Leg’s frontman appears anywhere tomorrow remains to be seen…
