This Just-in: King-Sized Tut-Tuts at Hot Leg’s Glasgow Faux Pas
While no one has ever accused ex-Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins of possessing subtlety or panache, a little research could have gone a long way to helping the Glasgow debut of his new “man rock” outfit Hot Leg go a bit more smoothly last night. The ‘Leg were delighting an enthusiastic crowd at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut with their dirty, dirty guitar stramash when, somewhat unexpectedly, they launched into a stomping cover of Tina Turner’s ‘Simply The Best’. Now, for anyone who, like Justin Hawkins, is not west of Scotland-savvy, this particular anthem has, for the past 20 years, been associated with Rangers Football Club – most particularly during their run of nine consecutive Scottish Premier League titles from 1989-1997. It therefore came as no surprise when many angry men started abandoning their pints and leaving hurriedly, lest they be associated for even a split-second with a roomful of drunks swaying along to this particular piece of air-punching nonsense. If only Celtic fans could have found a little bit of irony in the situation – having just (as the papers say) “crashed out” of European competition before the season has even begun, fans of last year’s UEFA Cup finalists are hardly in a position to proclaim superiority. As for the unintentionally hilarious Hawkins and his trendy crew (”Hot Leg are proud to wear Reebok trainers”, incidentally), it’ll be entertaining to see how soon they catch up with the Duke of Edinburgh in committing risible diplomatic gaffes.
Me and my boyfriend were at the concert last night and didn’t see anyone leave when they performed “simply the best” there was a few looks at each other when it started but no-one seemed that bothered.
They were great and Justin as always was entertaining
I’ve never heard so much media pish in all my life. See all these journalists who feel they have to earn their keep by spouting so much drivel? – sack the lot of them! One of the best concerts I’ve ever been at. Can’t wait ’till the’re next in Glasgow.

It was a fantastig gig! What the hell are you on about? Were you even there? If you bothered to do your research you would learn that the song in question was adopted by the LVF as their theme and motivational song long before it was associated with rangers, and this spilled over onto the terraces as most Rangers supporters are just right wing loyalist thugs, not that it is even relevant.
Justin rules
Just a second George..
Most Rangers fans are loyalist thugs? Im a Catholic, I dont have a criminal record and am a proud Rangers fan. Ive never had any abuse at Ibrox. Perhaps you would like to justify how most Rangers fans fit into this category?
On a more positive note, Hot Leg were AMAZING on Saturday, opne of the best gigs Ive ever been to….and no, I didnt see anyone leaving during Simply the Best. The media here talk utter garbage.
Great musis, great.
I think that’s enough politics… let’s get back to the music concert.
Er….I was there too, very near the door, and I hate to say it but I saw several people (particularly men) put down their pints and leave ina rage. The small mindedness of the people who did leave made me laugh and laugh. Twas a stormin’ gig all the same!
